What is the difference between Coaching and Counseling?
Coaching is a process in which the client is the expert on what part of their life they wish to make changes then contract with a experienced, trained, and certified coach to work with them through the journey. There is a definite wellness factor evident in the client journey as they wish to become “unstuck” and gain insight to methods and ways to make positive changes for improved life, improved lifestyle, improved business circumstances, or developing improved ways to relate in their marriage, their family, their business or office community, or other areas of their life. Coaching and the coaching relationship is very different than in the mental health type of service. The client contracts for a three, six, nine, or twelve month commitment. The individual, in the coaching process, can meet with their coach in person, via the web through Skype or other web based platforms, or via the telephone. Sessions often on scheduled for one hour per week at an agreeable time to both the client and coach. These types of services are not covered in an insurance plan, yet may be through an Employee Assistance process. Client and coach have confidentiality, yet unlike with mental health counseling, there isn’t a reference or use of priviledge.
Counseling, on the other hand, is determined to be based on a mental health issue yet with the hope of the client developing insight, tools, and movement in counseling to mental wellness. Session time frames are determined by the insurance carrier or by an evidenced based approach with a limited time given for the process be completed. A mental health diagnosis is required for treatment with services being provided to individuals, couples, families, or in group experiences.
